Why Old Time Radio Shows Can Help Relieve Stress

There’s a classic old time radio show that ran from the mid 1940s through to the mid 1950s. Every episode began with these words:

“Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you… Escape!”

Everyone plagued with stress, particularly work-based stress, can relate to this I am absolutely sure.

Not many people who are reading this will have gone into work every day without wishing they were elsewhere. Yes, for many of us, we don’t have such thoughts each working week day, but we just can’t deny that we never have them.

There are many techniques we can use to reduce this kind of work related stress including such things as introducing a fitness regime, improving our daily diet, meditation, and possibly even a form of counseling, but recently I discovered a pretty different technique that was very successful not only for one person, but for a whole office of staff covering every age group.

Amazingly the story I’m about to share involves old time radio shows that were broadcast during World War II and the decades that came immediately before and immediately after the War.

Carol (name changed to protect the innocent) had been working extra long days in her job as a programmer. It was the start of a new year and things were getting particularly fraught in their workplace.

Her workmates started to notice that when she came back from her lunch break she was like a totally different person from the one who had walked out only 30 minutes earlier. Eventually, a colleague decided to ask Carol what she was doing differently. Was it some kind of Zen meditation technique? Was she taking under-the-counter substances that were not strictly legal.

When she told them they were stunned.

Basically, Carol was simply going out for a thirty minute walk every day. To prevent her brain mulling over work problems she was listening old time radio shows through her iPod. All of the old radio shows she was listening to lasted approximately thirty minutes and so her walk, and the old radio shows, were roughly the same length.

This technique was doing three crucial things.

1. It was taking her mind off of her work.

2. It was giving her a chance to stretch.

3. It was ensuring she got her heart pumping at an above normal level at least once each day.

For a person working in an active, and often stressful office environment, these three things were essential.

Over the coming weeks other staff in the office followed exactly the same three techniques as she had, and the atmosphere around the office was transformed beyond all recognition.

And all this started from Carol’s passion for classic thirty minute old-time radio shows.
