Fencing Equipment For The Beginner

Besides a good attitude and a good amount of patience, there are many things that a fencer requires in order to be able to fence. Getting started all you will need are the fencing jacket, mask, glove and fencing equipment or a practice weapon, which is less involved than the obvious requirements of competition preparation. The main fencing swords used are the foil, the sabre, and the epee.

Many clubs will lend you fencing gear when you are just starting and doing a beginner course. Once you complete the course, and are hooked to it, you will be encouraged to buy your own set of gear. There are two different options for a beginner.

The first option is to buy the equipment piece-wise, until you have a full set. The other option is to purchase a starter kit, these kits contain all the basic elements of fencing requirements already assemble and sold as a unit. You have a list of required items, but what do you do with it? Prior to purchasing or using your own equipment it is important to have a solid basic understanding of both capability and purpose of each item.

The fencing jacket is made with the intent of protecting the fencer. It is important to select a jacket which is both well made and provides adequate protective coverage. There is no standard minimum constraint in the US, there is a particular standard of protection in Europe, though. For tournaments which are international in scope, such as Olympic fencing, there are greater requirements.

When starting out, the basic uniforms are more than enough. The main choices you’ll require to make are between cotton or synthetic materials. Cotton is likely to be cheaper, but is heavier and hotter whilst the synthetic materials are lighter weight but a little more expensive.

The mask is used for safety so make sure you choose a mask that is equipped with enough padding, fits well and doesn’t bear down on the top of your head or your chin. Although you can buy non-electric gloves, it really is worthwhile to get a glove equipped with a cuff that you can wear for electric fencing.

This cuff allows you to easily connect the body cord to an electric weapon from under the sleeve. These weapons come in all sizes, small to large, or in separate glove sizes. Picking up gloves that are individually sized will help you get a better fit, but they will also cost you more. The foil is made for thrusting, with a thin blade, and rounded (also known as foiled) tip. Foil blades are greatly flexible, able to bend upon contact with an opponent, thus preventing injuries.

Improve Your Swing and Lower Your Score

Golfers beginners to professionals are constantly looking to shave strokes off their game. And it goes without saying that one of the core basics to good golf is a good swing. A careful review of how you swing your club can make significant shave strokes offments to your game. Eliminating what you are doing wrong and improving what you are doing right will create significant and cumulative shave strokes offments.

There are certain basic elements to the swing that even the pros often overlook. As you read this article you’ll find these tips will make measurable if sometimes modest shave strokes offments that accumulate to lowering your score.

Let’s start with your stance. The first thing you want to do is to make sure that you are steady yet relaxed. If your posture is uptight and rigid, then there is an increased chance that your swing won’t arc and follow through the way you want it to.

Once you are in a comfortable and relaxed position with your club in hand, you’ll also want to make sure that your feet are solidly planted about a shoulder’s width apart. Many golfers are tempted to raise their heels up when they swing, but this leads to a poor swing. If you are lifting your heels up while you swing, this tends to alter your center of gravity and negatively impacts the velocity of your swing. It is now obvious, your posture is one of the most important aspects here.

To gain consistency in you swing, your must practice as often as possible. Even if you are a person who only golfs a couple times a month, it’s still important to practice. Even when you are just golfing for enjoyment, it’s even more enjoyment when you do better. You won’t be able to see any real results unless you dedicate a portion of your time to mastering your swing. You should feel confident in whichever one you choose.

One of the big challenges that golfers who live in the northern half of the United States face is the inability to play golf during the winter months. However, in many of these areas, homes are built with basements that if they have a high enough ceiling can be a great place to set up practice net, a golf mat which will allow you to swing away.

Another great option is to use a golf simulator. These can dramatically shave strokes off your swing as they provide information you need to make the small but important changes to get better. And the great thing is that these golf simulators are now quite inexpensive and can hook up to a simple laptop. Find simulators and other great equipment for golfers at many online golf stores.

Finally, if it’s your spouse who golfs, don’t forget that a good video on swing improvement, a practice net or golf simulator all make golf accessories and gifts which he (or she) will love for years to come.
